Learning about Grassroots Power at the HLPF

Posted on July 24, 2017 by Noel Schroeder

Grassroots groups around the world are eager and poised to participate in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, so why haven’t they been fully integrated into SDG-era decision-making? This was the question posed to participants at “Boosting Grassroots Participation in SDG Implementation,” Women Thrive’s workshop at the United Nations last week.

Held during the High Level Political Forum, the United Nations' annual meeting to assess progress towards meeting the 17 SDGs, the workshop brought together activists, government representatives, and other stakeholders from around the world to find answers to this pressing question.

The workshop built on evidence from our National SDG Scorecard tool to demonstrate grassroots women’s rights groups exclusion from SDG implementation processes and the need to fund and include them in decision-making. Together, the 50+ participants explored how to shift the balance of power to marginalized groups and identified innovative solutions to improve grassroots engagement.

Joined by our friends at NGO/CSW/NY, we shared tools and strategies from our Achieve SDG5 initiative to increase solidarity among grassroots groups, improve advocacy outcomes at the national and global levels, and make sure that grassroots women’s rights groups are #InTheRoom where decisions are being made.
