Making gender equality a reality.

Still Left Behind: Grassroots Women's Rights Organizations' Inclusion in SDG5's National Implementation Processes

Posted on June 14, 2017 by Women Thrive Alliance

On June 7, Women Thrive Alliance shared results from our National SDG Scorecard (NSC) at a panel discussion co-hosted by InterAction. The NSC measures grassroots women's rights and gender equality organizations' knowledge of as well as participation in national-level SDG implementation.

Women Thrive Alliance used Storify to share highlights the event.

We started by sharing the good news! For instance, of the 150 Alliance member organizations, 97% are aware of the SDG framework!

However, overall the data showed that most feel left out of the decision-making processes.

The NSC also found mixed and unsatisfactory results, particularly around the issue of safety when doing work on gender equality.

The biggest problem the NSC results showed us, though, was around financing, specifically the funding of grassroots organizations around the SDGs.
  18.
Women's right orgs that are at grassroots level have even less visibility and funding. This needs to be taken into acct for #achivesdg5

The data was fascinating, but it also led to a lot of questions. The issue of civil society space and the privatization of the United Nations started the discussion.

By the end of the discussion, the event had shown that the NSC findings were not only a great source of data but truly examine SDG implementation and inclusion of grassroots organizations. Furthermore, the data underlined the reasons why Women Thrive's Alliance members are joining the Alliance, because it unites and mobilizes hundreds of women’s rights and gender equality organizations in over 50 countries, equipping them with the skills, the connections, and the support needed to influence social and gender justice agendas at local, national, and global levels.
