Making gender equality a reality.

Gender Timeline

On March 1, 2012 the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) released its policy for Gender Equality and Female Empowerment, a monumental step toward better integrating gender and including women and girls in U.S. international assistance. This new policy, which had not been updated in 30 years, recognizes that integrating women and girls is essential to effective international assistance across all sectors, including health, climate change, food security, science and technology, economic growth, democracy and governance, and humanitarian assistance. This new mandate will apply to all USAID implementers and contractors, and builds in accountability for gender integration across the agency.
