Making gender equality a reality.

Advocacy for Gender Equality

We are setting our sights on a monumental — but attainable — goal: achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls by 2030.

In 2015, 193 countries agreed to the United Nations’ new global agenda to end poverty, Agenda 2030. This agenda is comprised of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from ending poverty to combatting climate change. Ultimately, the agenda emphasizes leaving no one behind – creating a world where all people can thrive.

Women Thrive will support grassroots organizations working directly with women and girls in advocacy around implementing SDG 5 on gender equality. Equipped with skills, connections, and resources, Alliance members will track governments’ commitments and actions and hold all stakeholders accountable to achieving gender equality by 2030.

Take a look at just a few of our advocacy projects:

Countries around the world are starting to implement the United Nations’ new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Alliance members want to make sure that women and girls aren’t left behind. They’re making sure that SDG 5 on gender equality women and girls’ empowerment is a priority in every country.

The #AchieveSDG5 Initiative illustrates the widespread support for gender equality worldwide. Around the world, advocates have called for government decision-making processes to be participatory, citizen-driven, and inclusive of grassroots women and girls. #InTheRoom was born from the results of our 2017 National SDG Scorecard, which revealed that grassroots women’s rights groups and gender equality advocates, for the most part, are consistently left out of SDG-related decision-making spaces.

#InTheRoom is one initiative to galvanize women’s rights organizations from around the world around the importance of women’s rights advocates place and participation in decision-making on the SDGs at the national and international levels. Your support and participation in this campaign is vital to making it a success. Learn more about the campaign and how you can participate here.

The #FeministFridays series is a montly discussion around feminism and development; the way the development community approaches gender equality; notions of power and accountability within our work; and an opportunity to hear directly from Global South feminists and gender equality advocates. National Advocacy Score Cards

National Advocacy Score Cards provide a way to assess civil society's inclusion into the SDG implementation process at the national level, with a particular focus on SDG5. Women Thrive Alliance members provide feedback on their national processes, how safe and secure advocates are, and how gender equality advocates are (or are not) being included in decision-making. Our National Advocacy Score Card tool has been co-created with Women Thrive Alliance members, and data is collected on an annual basis. Please read our Global National Scorecard reports in English and French here.

Advocacy Coaching and National Advocacy Roadmaps

Women Thrive Alliance works closely with coalitions and member organizations to identify advocacy opportunities and plan activities to further gender equality policies and programs. We also provide strategic support to existing campaigns to help them surmount challenges.
