Statement from the Executive Director and Chair of the Board
It is with great excitement that we announce that Women Thrive Worldwide is changing its name to Women Thrive Alliance. As many of you know, Women Thrive has focused in recent years on growing its global network of grassroots women’s organizations in developing countries, what we had called the Alliance for Women’s Solutions. This Alliance now consists of some 230 women’s rights organizations around the globe. Last year, Women Thrive and Alliance members were instrumental in securing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 (“Quality Education”) after four hard years of collective advocacy. In March 2016, we launched a report called “Getting equitable education on the global agenda: lessons from collective advocacy at the United Nations”.
Given the consensus in the global development community around the centrality of the Sustainable Development Goals, our successful work around SDG 4, Alliance members’ priorities and the global momentum to achieve true gender equality by 2030, we are now convinced that our efforts must focus on ensuring strong, sustainable grassroots women’s rights organizations around the globe, and to unite around SDG 5 (“Gender Equality”). Going forward, Women Thrive's primary focus will be on strengthening the global movement for gender equality and ensuring that grassroots gender equality organizations hold their governments accountable to the successful implementation of SDG 5.
The organization will be led by Emily Bove, who has set the vision for and directed Women Thrive’s global network since October 2014. She will be supported by Noel Schroeder, who has been with the organization since 2013 and has developed our capacity building model and led our UN-focused advocacy. Again, some 230 Alliance members in over 50 countries are now contributing to growing and strengthening the organization’s mission and agenda, connecting with each other, partnering on campaigns for gender equality, and accessing critical knowledge and skills to advance advocacy for women’s rights. This work will expand in breadth and depth as the Women Thrive Alliance focuses on implementing SDG 5 through advocacy initiatives and campaigns around the globe.
Women Thrive (then the Women’s EDGE Coalition) was born out of a desire to see women and girls living in poverty around the globe have a voice in decision-making. We believe this next stage for the organization is a natural transition that will enable our network of global grassroots women’s organizations to connect, learn and advocate in a global campaign to implement SDG 5 - the realization of full gender equality for the more than 1 billion women and girls living in poverty around the globe.
We thank you for all of your support over our 18-year history and are excited to continue working with and strengthening grassroots gender equality organizations around the world.
