Women & Poverty in Africa: A Look at the Numbers

On August 4, leaders from across Africa will convene in Washington, D.C. for the three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. President Obama said just last month that, "The most successful countries are the ones who treat their women well...If you are not empowering your women you are crippling your country."

While women across Africa have made great strides as legislators, entrepreneurs and leaders, so much more needs to be done to empower women who still live in poverty.

Women Thrive's new fact sheet examines recent statistics on some of the issues women at the base of the economic pyramid in Africa still face—issues around women's economic opportunities, girls' education and learning, gender-based violence, and hunger.
