Mónica leads Women Thrive’s Achieve SDG5 Initiative and U.N. advocacy. Her work focuses on collective campaigns on SDG5, providing ongoing support to our members in building Achieve SDG5 coalitions and campaign implementation. She represents Women Thrive in all SDG-related entities and spearheads our #FeministFriday series.
A Third Culture Kid guided by a feminist conviction, Mónica has worked in Global South countries supporting civil society organizations working on gender-based violence prevention and response, girls’ education, and non-violent conflict resolution and peacebuilding (through theatre). She has extensive experience at the United Nations, as well as with grassroots gender equality organizations in Nicaragua, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, and Timor-Leste. Prior to (returning to) Women Thrive, Mónica designed and launched the THINX Foundation, the non-profit affiliate of THINX, a period-proof underwear company.
Mónica holds a Master’s degree in International Development Studies and Gender Equality Policy from the Elliott School at the George Washington University in D.C. and dual Bachelor’s degree in Political Communications and Theatre Education from Emerson College in Boston, M.A.
