International Women’s Day 2010

On March 4, 2010, Women Thrive Worldwide and UNIFEM hosted the Second Annual International Women’s Day Breakfast: “Lessons from the Frontlines: Afghanistan, Haiti and the Path to a More Secure World.
The annual Capitol Hill breakfast was held on March 4, 2010 in the U.S. Senate Dirksen building and was co-chaired by Senators Mary Landrieu and Olympia Snowe and Congresswomen Nita Lowey and Kay Granger. High-level policymakers and NGO and private sector leaders gathered to hear The Honorable Maria Otero, Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, Sentaor Mary Landrieu, Suraya Pakzad, founder of Voice of Women Organization in Afghanistan, Kathy Mangones, UNIFEM Haiti Program Coordinator, Carol Costello, CNN Correspondent, Ritu Sharma, President and Co-founder of Women Thrive Worldwide, and Ines Alberdi, UNIFEM Executive Director.
The Obama Administration and Congressional leaders are moving forward with ambitious and important plans to reform U.S. foreign assistance and make women’s empowerment a central focus of U.S. foreign policy. With these unprecedented plans as a backdrop, the speakers shared success stories from Afghanistan and Haiti and discussed opportunities and challenges on the horizon for women working to create a more secure world.
