Women Thrive and over 60 organizations oppose the confirmation of Mike Pompeo as the Secretary of State.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr 26) — Women Thrive Alliance, a global feminist advocacy network of over 315 grassroots women’s right and gender equality activists in over 50 countries, joins more than 60 peer organizations committed to diplomacy, reproductive rights, and human rights, that oppose the confirmation of Mike Pompeo to the position of Secretary of State of the U.S. Department of State.
The selection of Mr. Pompeo to be Secretary of State is yet another decision by the Trump administration to choose a person for a leadership position whose regressive views towards women’s health, reproductive rights, and the LGBTQIA community undermines the office they are nominated to lead.
“The State Department once stood as an institution that prioritized human rights and worked hard to promote women and girls’ rights around the world. We hope that, as the new Secretary of State, Mr. Pompeo will fully commit to promoting women’s rights and gender equality throughout the agency’s mission, as well as working closely with civil society organizations here in the U.S. and all around the world to ensure these issues are prioritized and invested in,” said Women Thrive Executive Director Emily Bove.
Mr. Pompeo’s congressional record shows that he is anything but a person who stands up for the rights of women and girls. During Mr. Pompeo’s tenure in Congress, he voted to permanently prohibit funding to the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) and Planned Parenthood. Collectively, they provide sexual and reproductive health services to millions of women and girls all around the world. Mr. Pompeo has been an ardent advocate against LGBTQIA rights to the point of voting against a revised version for the Violence Against Women Act because it included protections for same-sex couples.
The confirmation of Mr. Pompeo today, as Secretary of State, ensures that his regressive views he holds towards women and girls and the LGBTQIA community will threaten the State Department’s current and future investments related to women and girls. As the face of U.S. foreign diplomacy as well the head decision-maker controlling the funding and policies that affect the lives of millions of women and girls around the world, the Secretary of State must uphold the State Department’s responsibility to defend the rights of all people and be a leader of women’s rights and gender equality.
