Kanchan is an award-winning Nepalese grassroots women’s rights activist and social entrepreneur. At Women Thrive Alliance, Kanchan is pursuing her passion to create an inclusive world where young women and girls can play an important role in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

In addition to being Women Thrive’s U.N. Advocacy Intern, Kanchan serves as the U.N. Women’s Global Champion for Women’s Economic Empowerment and Global Youth Advocate for Global Citizen. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of Sustainable Fish Farming Initiative, a social enterprise she founded at 16, that empowers South Asian rural indigenous women to combat extreme hunger and poverty through sustainable aquaculture and microfinance. She previously coordinated efforts of women-led and youth-serving organizations around negotiation processes at the United Nations in addition to presenting her interventions at the U.N. High-Level Political Forum. As the Global Ambassador of Women Protection Center — an organisation that assists rescued women and children survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking in South Asia — she works to raise awareness and advocacy for prevention of girl trafficking, investment in young & adolescent girls’ education, upliftment of the status of marginalised and indigenous girls/women & advancement of Sexual & Reproductive Health Rights.

Prior to joining Women Thrive, Amatya led the Youth Assembly at the United Nations’ Resolution Committee and mentored its young delegates from 90+ countries from across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Previously, she also worked as the International Director of United Nations Youth and Student Association. As a grassroots women rights advocate, she has addressed world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, Clinton Global Initiative, among others and contributes regularly at various conferences and media relating to gender-related issues in South Asia.

She was recently recognized by President Bill Clinton (2017 Presidential Honor Roll Award), Youth Service America (2017 Everyday Young Hero Award), Women Economic Forum (2018 Young Leaders Award) and listed as ‘100 leaders under 25’ by Impact Squared.
